2840 Angus Street : : Silverlake

Home As Art pick :: 2840 Angus Street

Designed in 1957 by USC architecture student Edward C. Malone for his friends Donald and Ruby Moreland in the "modern" post-and-beam-style. Influenced by the USC School of architecture, the recognized progenitor of this style of architecture, Mr. Malone included open beamed ceilings, Douglas Fir paneling, clerestory and floor to ceiling windows in his vision. Meticulously maintained and restored by its current owners, this is a gem. Superb Kitchen has vintage Hotpoint "Customline" oven and cooktop , cork flooring and "flying coffin" overhead cabinetry. Vintage bath features original tile and fixtures with separate tub and stall shower. Very private rear yard and patio has stepping stone and pebble surfaces with bamboo shrubbery. An expansive deck skirting the front of the structure offers tree-top views of the mountains. Ivanhoe Elementary.

The Art of Play

Playground Crochet by Toshiko Horiuchi MacAdam

"It's a happy talent to know how to play."
Ralph Waldo Emerson

Playscapes, a blog dedicated to the art of playground design, has featured some amazing playgrounds and play spaces from around the world.  From contemporary artists / sculptors like fiber artist Toshiko Horiuchi MacAdam who crochet's her playscapes by hand, or British sculptor Gary Webb's colorful "interactive" sculpture, to mid-century modern sculptors like Isamu Noguchi and Egon Moller-Nielsen.  What a great way to experience and explore art.

My Home As Art : : David, Lyn, Benjamin, & Georgia

David, Lyn, Benjamin, and Georgia have made this Pasadena landmark their own Home As Art.  This Greene and Greene Craftsman is now available for sale.

What do you love most about your home? The flow of the home's floor plan. It has great bones. All of the rooms feel unique as each space takes advantage of its location. The wood is beautiful throughout, and there are windows everywhere that allow the natural light in and provide views of the lawn and sunset.

What drew you to your home? One of the things that attracted us to the house was its authenticity. We felt there was a grace and warm charm. The materials, the light, and the sense of strength it has were all alluring. No one had worked on it for years and the decor was decades old when we first walked in, but having the vision of the homes possibilities was appealing. We also loved the street with its mature oak trees and wide sidewalks.

What is your favorite thing to do at home? Have friends over, the space is great for entertaining. The flow of the house works for both adults and kids. When we have parties there are people hanging out in every part of the house, and the kids entertain themselves really easily, going back and forth between the upstairs rooms and roaming around the backyard.

When I'm home I feel...? Relaxed and present. Having been built so long ago the house has a relative ease about it that encourages you to slow down and be a part of the space you are in.

What makes your home "Art"? Charles and Henry Greene were artists. The use of materials, proportions, and colors (once we found the original ones) reveal the amount of planning and thought that went into the design of each room. Their creativity is inspiring.
