Lorcan O'Herlihy Architects

We love the work of Lorcan O'Herlihy Architects.  Having sold three LOHA designed multi-unit projects in West Hollywood, we have an intimate appreciation of his work and architectural point of view.  Many aspire to acquire and inhabit a home designed by an award winning architect and buying an architectural condominium is an affordable and accessible option.  In case you're not familiar with some of his single family homes, we thought we'd share a few of our favorites.

My Home As Art : : Martha & Debe : : Pasadena

Martha and Debe's passion for gardening is evident in the verdant sanctuary they've created surrounding their restored bungalow in Pasadena.

You can read more about their garden and home which has been featured this month in American Bungalow.

What do you love most about your home?
MARTHA:  That it is a sanctuary.
DEBE: That it is a sanctuary.

What drew you to your home?
MARTHA: The simplicity of the design of the house, the mature fruit trees, the spaciousness of the yard.
DEBE: The yard, craftsman design, and that it could be a wonderful project

What is your favorite thing to do at home?
MARTHA: To work in my office with the windows open, enjoying the various seasons of the garden.  Playing with my grandchildren in my office.  Enjoying the "rainbows" created as the sun comes through the various glass knick knacks on the window sill.  Enjoying the company of others on the patio.
DEBE: Work in the garden creating new spaces and design, sitting outside at twilight, watching the wildlife enjoy the space.

When I'm home I feel...?
MARTHA: Content, at peace.
DEBE: Centered and content.

What makes your home "Art"?
MARTHA: The colors and the harmony that they create along with all the other "touches".
DEBE: The creative way everything comes together. The color choices of both the buildings and plants and the unique temperament of each space.

1435 Tanager Way : : Bird Streets

Home As Art Pick : : 1435 Tanager Way, Los Angeles

We loved this home when we saw it in Elle Decor, and now it's offered for sale.  This stunning 'Bird Streets' home located above the Sunset Strip sets the standard for celebrity living.  Owners Megan Mullally (Will & Grace) and Nick Offerman (Parks & Recreation) renovated their home with the help of local interior designer Ames Ingham.  The result, as described in Elle Decor is "a decorative drama of contrasts: restrained modern furniture accented with highly figured Asian antiques; neutral fabrics and finishes with occasional pops of intense color and graphic rugs; and comfortable introspective rooms with expansive views of city and sky." And if you're looking for something truly "turn-key" this property is also available furnished (price upon request).

Debating Home As "Art" : : NY Times

The Philip Johnson glass house : : Connecticut : : photo by Phil Mansfield

There was a really interesting article in the New York Times the other day that posed a question that got our attention. The article,  "Overpriced Real Estate?  Well, maybe its Art" debates some instances of luxury real estate being marketed and sold as art.  "If it's $100 million, is it art?" Good question.  Recently, sales prices in Manhattan have been flirting with the $100 million barrier, but that niche market is comprised of luxury penthouses. Or rather, luxury condos.

Interestingly, landmark residences that are widely considered to be architectural masterpieces, aren't getting anywhere near $100 million.  The Farnsworth House, a modernist masterpiece by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, situated on 58 acres of prairie southwest of Chicago, sold to The National Trust of Historic Preservation for $7.5 million.  In our neck of the woods, the Ennis House by Frank Lloyd Wright, located in Los Feliz, sold for $4.5 million.  According to Philip White, President of Sotheby's, "these homes transformed architecture the way Picasso transformed the art world."

We couldn't agree more.  At deasy/penner we celebrate the notion Home As Art.  But what does that mean?  To us, it's a home that is an expression of who we are and how we live.  A home that is celebrated for it's beauty and honored for the emotional connection that it elicits from us.  It's a place where we start our day and end our day, surrounded by the people and things that we love.

Tell us what you think.  What makes a home ART?

Graham Nash Photo Assemblages : : Gallery 169

"THIS COULD BE YOU"

Gallery 169 is proud to present:

new photo assemblages by legendary singer-songwriter

GRAHAM NASH

Artist's Opening Reception
Saturday, Sept. 1st, 5pm - 8pm

Graham Nash has helped shape the world around him through ideas, innovations, and influential works of art for more than four decades.  A legendary singer-songwriter, Nash is also an internationally renowned photographer and digital imaging pioneer whose work is represented—by a classic 1969 portrait of David Crosby—in the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American.Widely known as an activist in support of causes related to social justice, peace, environmental stewardship, and progressive politics, Nash addresses these issues in the twelve (12) previously un-exhibited, large format photo assemblages comprising “This Could Be You,” also the title of one of the works.  Each hand-embellished mixed-media piece examines and questions contemporary political events and societal mores.

“I believe that knowledge is power, that information and ideas are vital to our very survival, that our many problems should be faced, and can be dealt with,” says Nash.  “As an artist, I need to reflect my concerns regarding certain aspects of society facing me today.  I want to express my personal opinions about what goes on around me.  My intent is not to alienate, but to engage.  No one has to agree with me, but let’s keep an open mind.  After all, this could be you.”

A portion of proceeds from sales from the opening reception of Nash’s work at Gallery 169 will benefit the Bradley Manning Support Network (www.bradleymanning.org) and the Veterans For Peace Los Angeles (www.veteransforpeacela.org).  In 2011, Nash wrote the song—and released the video—“Almost Gone” to support the cause to free PFC Bradley Manning, an Army intelligence analyst arrested near Baghdad in July 2010 under suspicion of leaking classified information—including a video showing the killing of civilians in Iraq—to WikiLeaks.

Currently, Nash is touring the U.S. with Crosby, Stills and Nash.  CSN 2012, a 25-song set presenting the group’s first live performance film in more than 20 years, was released earlier this summer.  Captured in high-definition during the early portion of CSN’s 2012 world tour, the set is available worldwide from CSN Records in Blu-ray, DVD/2CD (3 discs), and Digital formats.

Born in Blackpool, England, Nash was appointed OBE by Queen Elizabeth in 2010.  He first rose to fame with British Invasion hit makers The Hollies, and went on to form Crosby, Stills & Nash in 1968.  Nash has been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, and is in the Songwriters Hall of Fame.

With his photography, Nash has exhibited worldwide.  His work is collected in the book Eye to Eye: Photographs by Graham Nash; he curated others’ work in Taking Aim: Unforgettable Rock ‘n’ Roll Photographs Selected by Graham Nash.  In 1990, he established Nash Editions, now one of the world’s top photographic printmaking houses—and recognized by the Smithsonian Institution for its role in the invention of digital fine art printing.
