My Napkin As Art

The humble little cocktail napkin.  So frail and unassuming, yet the so often the birthplace of art and innovative ideas.  For the past three years, Architectural Record has hosted a cocktail napkin sketch contest open to Architects and non-professionals.  They've sifted through thousands of entries and posted the winners online.  Here are a few of our favorites.

You can see more sketches here: 2010 / 2011 / 2012

Just Listed : : 333 Manford Way : : Pasadena

Built in 1960 this post and beam mid-century contemporary has been totally re-imagined and remodeled in the international style by the owner/designer. The residence is noticeably reminiscent of the architectural styles of Walter Gropius and Le Corbusier. This residence offers 75 feet of floor-to-ceiling walls of glass on two levels, overlooking the serene wooded hillside of Annandale Canyon, a protected preserve. A terrace and balcony run the entire length offering sliding doors from every room leading to intimate, re-landscaped gardens and patio areas surrounding the home. Modern open interior spaces have been re-designed with the extensive use of skylights creating light filled spaces; the walls of windows reveal stunning views of the dramatic, ever changing outdoors. A double entry on the top level opens to Living and Dining areas with a dual sided floating fireplace which anchors the two rooms, keeping them formal in feel but offering a wonderfully open expanse. There is an artfully designed, elegantly cozy library at one end of the living room. The kitchen has been totally re-designed with a large island, top of the line built-in stainless steel appliances, an extensive use of Caesarstone and features a large eating area and dramatic views. The master bedroom has an en suite full bath finished in Carrera marble. Additionally on this level is a guest bedroom and guest bath. The lower level features an enormous, nearly 30 foot long family room with a fireplace and terrazzo floors opening to a wonderful outdoor living area and the bucolic canyon setting. There are two bedrooms on this wing (one currently used as an office) which share yet another re-imagined bathroom with a trowel and walk-in shower. On the opposite wing of this level is a maids room, three quarter bath, laundry room and direct access to the carport. Throughout this sophisticated residence are fine quality appointments including new wood flooring and high end finishes. Manford Way is a quiet, private cul-de-sac in the exclusive North San Rafael neighborhood of Pasadena, minutes from the freeway, Rose Bowl, downtown Pasadena and Los Angeles with their renowned cultural centers. Everything that this thriving community has to offer will be at your fingertips. 333 Manford Way has been rebuilt with every detail revealing a true design sensibility and a stunning example of fine contemporary design.
