The Walnut House :: A Venice Pocket Listing

Tasked with building a home for his parents on a lot with a huge stone pine tree in the middle, Architect Daniel Monti of Modal Design decided to use the pine for inspiration, resulting in a unique home that plays with contrasting textures, light, color and materials, built around the tree.
The low maintenance, multi-generational design that ensued has been featured in various publications. Michael Webb of Architects Newspaper wrote:
"The home first appears as a composition of three volumes: the chocolate stucco cube of the garage to the left, the recessed band of glazing to the right, and the upper-level screen, cut away to frame windows. The open-plan living areas are treated as an architectural promenade through layered spaces, in which each step brings a new sensation. A small glazed office behind the garage frames the linear pool along the south face of the house, and the living areas open onto this walled side yard and onto the century-old pine, which finally reveals its immensity. Seating and kitchen cabinets are treated as floating islands.
A primary goal of the design was to exploit the plentiful Southern California light. Folds in the Cor-ten screen cast changing shadows over the exterior, and the circular openings act as sundials to record the hours and seasons inside. Light becomes a sculptural presence that adds depth to every space and surface. A linear band of skylights reveals the extended branches of the stone pine, which cast a dappled pattern of sun and shadow across the polished concrete floor, balancing the light flooding in through wide glass sliders. The staircase balustrade is composed of the steel discs that were laser-cut from the Cor-ten screen, spot-welded to create a tactile enclosure that mirrors the thousand points of light playing over oiled walnut floor boards.
The house feels more spacious than its 3,250 square feet would suggest, thanks to its good proportions, refined detailing, and the intimate connection with the outdoors. Though a delicate and skillfully balanced composition, more than anything, the Walnut house feels livable."

Just Listed :: Siegel House, 1950 by A. Quincy Jones, FAIA, Subject of Pacific Standard Time Presents: Modern Architecture in LA Exhibition

deasy/penner&partners is proud to announce this historic, exclusive listing, from LA-based Architect A. Quincy Jones. A retrospective of Jones’ work is currently being presented at The Hammer Museum by Pacific Standard Time.

Siegel House, 1950 :: A. Quincy Jones, FAIA

High up in the Santa Monica Mountains of Brentwood, with sweeping city and ocean views, this historic home is one of the most important of the small number remaining from this forward-looking postwar housing experiment. Still owned by the original family, one of four founders of the Mutual Housing Association, this home was literally the first built among 500 planned for this award-winning neighborhood. The architecture is elegantly simple, with form following function: a low-slung roof with tongue-and-groove ceilings held aloft by exposed beams and slender posts, creating clerestory windows on two sides. Eight-foot sliding glass doors allow the open plan to flow freely outdoors to patios and private gardens, creating the illusion of a home twice its actual size. Eligible for Mills Act status, which would save thousands of dollars annually in property taxes.

deasy/penner Spends 5 Minutes With: John O'Donnell of johnnie-o

We're fans of John O’Donnell’s “West Coast prep” collection, johnnie-O, which combines the conservative vibe of the east coast with the laid back, surf culture that permeates southern California. “I believe there are common threads  -- no pun intended,” says the Midwest native, who played golf for UCLA and later worked for the Golf Channel before becoming an entrepreneur. At johnnie-O's Santa Monica shop, you'll find a lifestyle collection of men’s, women’s and kids apparel and accessories. Fans include Pete Sampras, Adrian Grenier, Chris O’Donnell (John’s brother) and our own George Penner, who recently scored a johnnie-O blazer for an upcoming trip to Italy.

What does West Coast Prep mean to you? It means being able to comfortably combine the best of two different lifestyles.

What are your favorite things about living in southern California? As cliche as it sounds, the weather is off-the-charts good. I enjoy being with my large extended family, warm summer night dinners outdoors, and of course a round or two of golf.

Do you have a favorite L.A. golf course? There are too many classics to choose from, though LACC and Bel-Air are tough to beat.

Best local beach? It's fun going up to the various beaches in Malibu. They have that old school, southern California surfer vibe that is pretty cool.

Favorite LA neighborhood? Probably Santa Monica. If you can't find it there, you can't find it anywhere.

1920's Spanish Colonial Revival

This Spanish Colonial Revival exemplifies the 1920’s detailing and craftsmanship that defined the era. The grand two-story entry welcomes you into nearly 5,000 square feet of living space, offering a living room with a 25-foot cathedral ceiling, stone fireplace and French doors opening to the front veranda. There is a formal dining room with a paneled, coffered ceiling and eat-in Chef’s kitchen. The media/family room and library both have custom built-ins and French doors that open out to the courtyard patio. The Master Suite includes duel closets and romantic balcony off the bath. There are three additional bedrooms upstairs.

Sited on over a half-acre, street-to-street lot, this property provides privacy atop a long, gated driveway. The extensive patios, outdoor fireplace, private sparking pool and spa, cabana bath and fountains combine for seamless indoor/outdoor entertaining. Additional outdoor amenities include a yoga pavilion, raised vegetable garden, lush landscaping and verdant ocean-view vistas from the viewing pad. All this and celebrity provenance make it a spectacular estate property.

The property has been extensively renovated with the utmost historical and architectural sensitivity by the current owners. Hand painted ceilings, stenciled beams, original stained glass, vintage wrought iron gates and lighting fixtures remain intact.
