What do you love most about your home? The fact that Roy took a simple, existing, 40's beach bungalow and converted
into a magical space in keeping with the character of the neighborhood. We
are always discovering nuances of Roy in the architecture. His play with
scale light and humor is everywhere.
What drew you to your home?
The neighborhood. Rustic
Canyon is a special place. It is a serene oasis in the middle of a busy city,
yet within 5 minutes you can walk to Giorgio Baldi's restaurant or be at the
beach. It feels like we live on a country lane. The history, the
microclimate, the sense of community, the people, the ancient Sycamore trees -
it is the best place we have ever lived in Southern California. We
purchased the house from the estate of Jocelyn Brando, Marlon's sister.
She was blacklisted for signing a peace petition and wrote poetry and conducted
writer's workshops in this house.
What is your favorite thing to do at home? Drink tequila.
When I'm home I feel...? Relaxed and on vacation.
What makes your home "Art"? Designer/architect Roy McMakin said it
best:
"The house is both an object that shelters people and also the
artifact of my artistic expression. So I don't know what else you'd call it
except art."
