La Cañada Legacy :: Lloyd Wright

Geometric floor plan and sloping, angular roofline define the Gainsburg House, 1948, designed by Lloyd Wright. Methodically restored under the direction of mid-century architect authority Richard Corsini, the home features focal living room, with generous volumes, over-sized cement-block fireplace and large wood-framed glass doors that overlook the expansive California native garden and pool-like pond. Many of the rooms allow for outdoor access, creating a seamless flow between the interior and exterior. The renovated gathering kitchen with black walnut cabinetry, features modern amenities and opens directly to the dining room and family room. Master suite with study and three additional bedrooms, one of which is en suite. This significant mid-century home has been featured on many architectural and garden tours.

The garden at 1210 Journeys End represents nearly ten years of effort to establish an environmentally-nuanced design using predominately California native plants. The mature Japanese black pines, liquid amber and coast live oaks already on the property were retained as infrastructure, while the remainder of the yard reflects the varying micro-climates defined by sun, shade and soil conditions. In front of the house, orderly plantings on terraces and banks reflect the architecture of the house, while the lower yard aspires to the feeling of a natural setting of woodlands and chaparral. The formal garden and reflecting pool provide a transition from the patio area into the wild setting below.

The garden has been on the Theodore Payne Foundation native plant garden tour since 2004. An extensive, automated irrigation system, along with low usage plants, provides a highly water-efficient landscape.

Remodeled Mid-Century in Franklin Hills

Nestled in a lush and private cul de sac in the Franklin Hills of Los Feliz, this lovely one of a kind, light filled mid-century residence was completely remodeled with a permitted addition by owner/architect, Craig Maldonado.
