The garden at 1210 Journeys End represents nearly ten years of effort to establish an environmentally-nuanced design using predominately California native plants. The mature Japanese black pines, liquid amber and coast live oaks already on the property were retained as infrastructure, while the remainder of the yard reflects the varying micro-climates defined by sun, shade and soil conditions. In front of the house, orderly plantings on terraces and banks reflect the architecture of the house, while the lower yard aspires to the feeling of a natural setting of woodlands and chaparral. The formal garden and reflecting pool provide a transition from the patio area into the wild setting below.
The garden has been on the Theodore Payne Foundation native plant garden tour since 2004. An extensive, automated irrigation system, along with low usage plants, provides a highly water-efficient landscape.
