Venice Art Crawl :: Exhibition at the deasy/penner&venice pod

This Thursday :: March 19TH 6-10PM :: 308 Westminster Avenue, Venice, CA

Featuring The Work Of Zach Touchon

The work is influenced by advertising, particularly billboards in third world countries with heavily distressed surfaces. A history is created by adding layer after layer of paint and found materials. The goal of the work is to find a balance between chaos and control culminating in a sense of calm and integrity.

The work strives to cross boundaries and merge ideas creating something new and unique without losing sight of the school of thought that influenced the work. There is an undertone of child-like innocence with a fine-tuned maturity in the well thought out finished work.

The work is process driven, there is a kind of magic that happens when the composition reveals its self naturally through the process. Depth is created through the use of contrasting colors and shading, inviting the viewer to gaze into some other dimension. An intimate experience happens between the work and the viewer. Movement is created through the use of stacking and repeating shapes on top of each other. The composition appears to be suspended, making the viewer feel as though they could stick there hand right through the surface.

Coop Himmelb(l)au, Architects :: Himmelhaus

Steps to Abbot Kinney and the beach, this dynamic urban intervention is a rare private residence by the world-renowned Viennese firm, and the first project built by the Austrian team in the United States. Here the architects explode the constraints of functionalism into a thousand pieces, in the process creating a complex sculptural form interwoven with the apparatus of living. An impeccable Bulthaup kitchen and the finest European fixtures and appliances set an uncompromising standard of elegance inside, disguised by the raw drama of the exterior. The expressive use of concrete, glass and structural steel is tempered by an open plan with direct connections to the landscape, natural wood ceilings, the play of daylight and cool ocean breezes. At the top, a generous roof deck commands panoramic 360-degree views from the Getty Center to the Hollywood sign and mountains beyond downtown. Private, gated compound, 3 bed, 3.5 bath in 2,522 square feet.

Caplin House :: Frederick Fisher, Architect :: Venice

Prominent Venice architectural masterpiece known as the "Caplin House"; the first solo project designed by famed architect Frederick Fisher. This dramatic Venice home exudes creative beach-side living; with tall, expansive open spaces that allow maximum sunlight and a design concept to replicate that of a boat's hull and a roof top in the shape of waves breaking.

Central atrium space is bright and open with exposed beam ceiling, oversized skylights & lofted balconies. Just off the atrium is a fabulous gourmet kitchen with all stainless Viking appliances and ample built-in storage. From the kitchen, step down into a private guest BR with French doors that lead to the outdoor patio. Double staircase feeds from atrium; each with a BR/BA on either side and are separated by a library catwalk style balcony.

Stunning roofdeck with 360-degree views is the perfect finishing touch for Fred Fisher's iconic breakout solo Venice design; art meets architecture at the beach.

The Walnut House :: A Venice Pocket Listing

Tasked with building a home for his parents on a lot with a huge stone pine tree in the middle, Architect Daniel Monti of Modal Design decided to use the pine for inspiration, resulting in a unique home that plays with contrasting textures, light, color and materials, built around the tree.
The low maintenance, multi-generational design that ensued has been featured in various publications. Michael Webb of Architects Newspaper wrote:
"The home first appears as a composition of three volumes: the chocolate stucco cube of the garage to the left, the recessed band of glazing to the right, and the upper-level screen, cut away to frame windows. The open-plan living areas are treated as an architectural promenade through layered spaces, in which each step brings a new sensation. A small glazed office behind the garage frames the linear pool along the south face of the house, and the living areas open onto this walled side yard and onto the century-old pine, which finally reveals its immensity. Seating and kitchen cabinets are treated as floating islands.
A primary goal of the design was to exploit the plentiful Southern California light. Folds in the Cor-ten screen cast changing shadows over the exterior, and the circular openings act as sundials to record the hours and seasons inside. Light becomes a sculptural presence that adds depth to every space and surface. A linear band of skylights reveals the extended branches of the stone pine, which cast a dappled pattern of sun and shadow across the polished concrete floor, balancing the light flooding in through wide glass sliders. The staircase balustrade is composed of the steel discs that were laser-cut from the Cor-ten screen, spot-welded to create a tactile enclosure that mirrors the thousand points of light playing over oiled walnut floor boards.
The house feels more spacious than its 3,250 square feet would suggest, thanks to its good proportions, refined detailing, and the intimate connection with the outdoors. Though a delicate and skillfully balanced composition, more than anything, the Walnut house feels livable."
This distinctive property is on the market for the first time as a pocket listing: 3BD/2.5BA, 6,000s/f lot
