We're fans of John O’Donnell’s “West Coast prep” collection, johnnie-O, which combines the conservative vibe of the east coast with the laid back, surf culture that permeates southern California. “I believe there are common threads -- no pun intended,” says the Midwest native, who played golf for UCLA and later worked for the Golf Channel before becoming an entrepreneur. At johnnie-O's Santa Monica shop, you'll find a lifestyle collection of men’s, women’s and kids apparel and accessories. Fans include Pete Sampras, Adrian Grenier, Chris O’Donnell (John’s brother) and our own George Penner, who recently scored a johnnie-O blazer for an upcoming trip to Italy.
What does West Coast Prep mean to you? It means being able to comfortably combine the best of two different lifestyles.
What are your favorite things about living in southern California? As cliche as it sounds, the weather is off-the-charts good. I enjoy being with my large extended family, warm summer night dinners outdoors, and of course a round or two of golf.
Do you have a favorite L.A. golf course? There are too many classics to choose from, though LACC and Bel-Air are tough to beat.
Best local beach? It's fun going up to the various beaches in Malibu. They have that old school, southern California surfer vibe that is pretty cool.
Favorite LA neighborhood? Probably Santa Monica. If you can't find it there, you can't find it anywhere.
