Debating Home As "Art" : : NY Times

There was a really interesting article in the New York Times the other day that posed a question that got our attention. The article,  "Overpriced Real Estate?  Well, maybe its Art" debates some instances of luxury real estate being marketed and sold as art.  "If it's $100 million, is it art?" Good question.  Recently, sales prices in Manhattan have been flirting with the $100 million barrier, but that niche market is comprised of luxury penthouses. Or rather, luxury condos.

Interestingly, landmark residences that are widely considered to be architectural masterpieces, aren't getting anywhere near $100 million.  The Farnsworth House, a modernist masterpiece by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, situated on 58 acres of prairie southwest of Chicago, sold to The National Trust of Historic Preservation for $7.5 million.  In our neck of the woods, the Ennis House by Frank Lloyd Wright, located in Los Feliz, sold for $4.5 million.  According to Philip White, President of Sotheby's, "these homes transformed architecture the way Picasso transformed the art world."

We couldn't agree more.  At deasy/penner we celebrate the notion Home As Art.  But what does that mean?  To us, it's a home that is an expression of who we are and how we live.  A home that is celebrated for it's beauty and honored for the emotional connection that it elicits from us.  It's a place where we start our day and end our day, surrounded by the people and things that we love.

Tell us what you think.  What makes a home ART?

  1. Similar to a piece of artwork, a home has the ability to move you. And just like the varying tastes in art, different style homes stir up positive/negative emotions within people. The unique designs/homes created by (many) architects can only be viewed as the work of an artist in my opinion.
