Julia Morgan : : California's first female Architect

We recently featured a spectacular Garberville, CA home designed by architect Julia Morgan and wanted to share some other Julia Morgan masterpieces.  Best known for designing Hearst Castle in San Simeon, Julia Morgan designed over 700 buildings over her 45 year career, many of which are now designated California Landmarks.  Not only was she the first woman to graduate from the architecture program at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris, she was also the first woman licensed to practice architecture in California. From 1904-1947 Julia headed her own firm in San Franicisco and was instrumental in helping to rebuild the city's architecture after the 1906 earthquake, most notably taking on the restoration fo the Fairmont Hotel. A pioneer for women, Julia Morgan designed many buildings for institutions serving woman and girls. Her YWCA building in Pasadena, one of five YWCA's that she designed in Southern California, is in the process of being acquired by the city for restoration and public use after several years of decay.

"My buildings will be my legacy... they will speak for me long after I'm gone." - Julia Morgan (1872-1957)

  1. What a thrill to read about Julia. I had no idea she designed Hearst Castle. Her architectural vision is truly amazing and I would love to read the book to know about her. I had always wanted to be an architect even as a young girl. Julia accomplished amazing things in her lifetime and I think she'd easily be my hero!!

    Thanks for the great post.
